The Problem
There are three major problems I am trying to solve at Lutheran Memorial Camp:
- The chapel is not handicap friendly and it needs to be more accessible.
- The area in front of the lodge needs rejuvenation.
- Some seating issues need to be addressed and resolved.
Plan of Action
At Lutheran Memorial Camp, a church camp that I have gone to for many years, almost everything is kind of old or hasn't been replaced in a long time. For my Eagle Scout project, I decided to do a number of different things. The major part of my project was building a handicap accessible deck at the outdoor chapel. There really wasn't any space for people with disabilities to easily worship at the outdoor chapel, and I wanted to make them feel more welcome and help invite them into the loving atmosphere of the camp. Another portion of my project addressed the old, rotting planter beds. These beds were made from old railroad ties almost 40 years ago and they were in poor condition. For part of my project, my team and I tore out the old planters and replaced them with new white oak timbers, giving the front of the main lodge a fresher look. We also spread mulch on close to 100 square feet of space in front of the lodge, helping to spruce up the image of the lodge. The last part of my project addressed some seating issues. With the help of my friends I built 5 benches, installing two in front of the lodge, one on the handicap accessible deck, and the remaining two benches out at the 40-ft climbing wall.
