The Problem

The problem we are attempting to solve through our organization and projects are national problems. However, we understand that we must first initiate change in our own community and aid in the advancement of our own city. As a group of young leaders, our goal is to service the needs of high school and middle school students who have the potential of pursuing a college education. Due to the lack of educational funds available, college going culture and information in our community, our organization strives yearly to bring about change in education. The Lynwood Alumni College Conference was born in 2000. Over 600 students, parents, teachers and community members attend the event yearly. Lynwood Alumni continue to host the College Conference annually to increase college awareness and serve as inspiration for Lynwood youth. The conference gives students the opportunity to attend alumni led college workshops and a college fair. Over 600 students, parents and community members attend the conference every year. It is the only known grassroots college conference to be 100% volunteer. The conference includes a motivational speaker, a variety of workshops, a college fair, a parent workshop and panel, free lunch, and a donation based raffle, all led by alumni. Lynwood High School alumni lead the College Conference in hopes to increase student access to college information and post secondary educational attainment. Today, a decade after its birth, the Lynwood Alumni College Conference is proud to serve three high schools and three middle schools in increasing student access to college information and opportunities. Alongside the growth of the program in incorporating more students, we have also added an annual scholarship component. Through rigorous fundraising, the Lynwood Alumni College Conference Committee has been able to award a total of three $500 dollar scholarships to graduation seniors who will attend a community college, trade school or four year university.

Plan of Action

Our action plan is simple-- to inspire and lead by example! We intent to continue to host our annual conferences, workshops and college fairs to inspire and motivate youth. We will continue to strive to provide students the tools and information necessary to seek educational opportunities after high school. Lastly, we plan to continue our vigorous fundraising to provide underprivileged youth financial assistance in their educational goals. Lastly, our largest goal and action plan is to become a non-profit organization in order to provide better services to students, our community and financial supporters. We have proved that our organization will survive by providing Lynwood students a decade of inspiration. We have served over 5,000 students within the last 10 years and have many students return to join us in our efforts.
