Magnolia Project

the problem:

The Magnolia Project is a student, staff and faculty initiative committed to raise on-campus awareness of the injustices surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Our main objective is to provide students with an opportunity to contribute to the rebuilding efforts, and to serve the disenfranchised, low-income communities of the Gulf Coast region.

why it's important:

On August 25, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, displacing million of residents and destroying thousands of homes. Of the most affected areas, the most devastated were the low-income, underprivileged neighborhoods whose road to reconstruction is to this day an ongoing struggle. More than four years after one of the worse disasters in U.S. history, little progress has been made in restoring the lives of the people and communities impacted by Katrina. Therefore, our efforts to facilitate Katrina recovery are not only a priority, but a necessity.

the plan of action:

The Magnolia Project consists of three distinct initiatives: a 3-week summer service trip; an 8-week summer internship program; and a developing semester-long exchange program with the University of New Orleans. Each of these approaches is meant to contribute to the rebuilding efforts of the Gulf Coast in a unique way. Through the service trip, participants engage in hands-on volunteering through community-partnered organizations, while during the internships, students work within these same community organizations and receive an in-depth understanding of how these non-profits functions. During the Semester Exchange, students work on a long-term basis with community organizations to ensure that Magnolia Project has a year-long participation in the rebuilding efforts.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by becoming a participant in any one of our initiatives, becoming part of our Community Advisory Group (CAG), or working with us during our trips to the Gulf Coast.
