The Problem
In our nation approximately 1 in 4 women suffer abuse, 10 million single moms struggle to support their children and themselves, 83 percent of all terminal hospitalizations of children involve long stays in intensive care, 800,000 people will lose a spouse this year, 1 in 8 adolescents may suffer from depression, 22.5 million Americans need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Yet only 3.8 million of these will receive treatment, and 50% to 90% of those treated will relapse. There is a lot of pain, heartbreak, grief, illness, depression, and disappointment in our world and in our communities. We can’t change circumstances or those around us who may be suffering, but we can be there for support, provide them with resources, and offer them hope that their lives can be made beautiful while helping them see the glimpse of beauty along the journey. Over the years, I’ve come across so many people who’ve said, “I just need hope…hope that something better is possible”. In countless conversions with an array of individuals, I’ve learned that change must be desired and opportunities to make change must be recognized and pursued. However, many do not know that change is possible for them; and do not have the resources, opportunities, or support to pursue a more beautiful life. That is what Make It Beautiful provides…. “hope for a new tomorrow and support for the journey today” .
Plan of Action
It all started in the spring of 2008 just as an idea. This idea soon developed into a passion. I began to speak with people and as I spoke, the passion for this spread. The first several months were more or less a campaign to get people involved and inspire people to make their lives and the lives or others more beautiful. This was successful…. Everything so far has been donated by individuals in the community including outreach ideas, logo design, business card creations, legal filings, non-profit fillings, advertising, staff recruitement, media tips,..and most of all, time. Because of this support we were able to become set up as an offical non-profit incorpoation with the state and have started the fillings for non-profit status.
Our future plans include launching the “Just Be Kids” program which will involve a partnership with local children’s hospitals and local children’s shelters. Through this program, we will offer hope, support, and opportunities for children to “just be kids” even in the midst of difficult situations….with the goal of making beautiful moments and life-long memories that both they and their families can hold onto.
We will be launching the “Single & Strong” program for single parents who need support as they work to build a stronger future for both themselves and their children.
We are also preparing for the launch of the “Beautiful Media Campaign” in which we will be building awareness in various media outlets across the region this spring and summer.
