The Problem
I would like to provide positive programs for youth participation afterschool and during school breaks like summer and spring. In my community, we didn't have anything available for youths to participate actively. As a result, many of the youths in my community would drop out of school once they entered the 9th grade; many would hang out on street corners daily or either in empty/vacant parking lot doing nothing. My community has a population of about 2480 people. Jobs are very limited and the unemployment rate is extremely high. I want to offer kids my age, younger and older an opportunity to Do Something!
Plan of Action
First, I have already recruited adults to assist with MALES. We have three adult sponsors. We have established our bylaws, articles of incorporation and is in the process of filing with the state of Mississippi as well as with the IRS to become non-profit. We have officers and we meet weekly. We have established a yearly calendar that will include community service projects, sporting events and mentoring opportunities. We are also planning on developing a community garden which would lead to the development of a Farmer's Market in our community. We plan to get our organization up and running effectively and then branch out into other neighboring communities.
