The Problem
Gang violence is rampant where I live and after being involved in martial arts I saw that it made an impact on youth. MAYi is trying to reach "at risk" youth within their neighborhoods a opportunity to benefit in the physical and mental empowerment that the martial arts has to offer. By training mind and body together you empower young people to be able to stand tall and make could decisions when faced with adversity.
Plan of Action
MAYi operates outreach programs where we take the dojo to the neighborhoods where we are needed most. All sites donate the space so we keep operating costs low. After 7 yrs we have worked with over 1200 youth, produced 30 plus black belts (a 3 to 4 yr commitment by the youth)and we are looking to grow to the next level. All teens help run classes, go through job readiness training, attend leadership classes, etc. We are now adding fit tests and BMI readings along with a nutritional component through gardening and healthy food preparation/
