The Problem

A reptile rescue group called Maxman Reptile Rescue needs large outdoor reptile enclosures built. I'm taking this on as my Boy Scout Eagle Project. I'm trying to raise funds and find "avian netting" to use to wrap the enclosures. I plan on building four (4) enclosures 5' square out of PVC pipe and fittings, surrounded by aviary or avian netting (or possibly aquaculture netting).

Plan of Action

My plan is to build three (4) outdoor enclosures for the large snakes and lizards, so they can get out in the fresh air and sun, providing a healthier environment for them than the indoors and reducing the energy used to keep them warm and providing them with UVA and UVB natural lighting.

Project Updates

Project is complete! The animals are now enjoying the sun and fresh air for the rest of the summer and hopefully we'll have a warm fall.

Great news! I won one of the ASPCA Grants and also raised $300 at my car wash fundraiser. I think I might have enough money to pay for everything I need now, thanks to everyone's help and generosity.

My project has grown. Thanks in part to the generosity of The Home Depot, I'm planning to build four (4) enclosures, the size has also changed to 5 foot square. The outside of the enclosures will be custom made from "aquaculture netting" if I can find someone willing to sew/manufacture them. Instead of a door (where the reptiles could possibly find a small spot to squeeze through), I've decided to make a zippered opening where the volunteers can enter and exit when they take the animals in and out of the enclosures.

Finished reptile enclosure build on August 15th with the help of Mark, Cameron and Connor. Drove the enclosures out to Maxman Reptile Rescue for the reptiles to get some extra time in the sun. Thanks to everyone who helped and thank you Diana, who runs Maxman Reptile Rescue for the inspiration.
