The Problem

There are plenty of ways to take action in our community to help meet one of our most basic needs: FOOD. Sadly, the number of underprivileged children in our community is growing. They lack food resources and don't have the privilege to celebrate any holidays. In 2011 I took the initiative to start a program which I named: Meals from the Heart. For the past two years I have adopted a class at a school of underprivileged students in my community. I deliver “meal bags” to them every week so it ensures at least one complete meal for them and their respective family members for the weekend. Each bag could contain: one bag of rice, one can of beans, vegetables, soup, meat and a coloring book with crayons. On special occasions I like to spoil the students since they do not get spoiled at home. For example, for Christmas I purchased toys and wrapped it for each student.

Plan of Action

This year I would like to put together an Easter egg hunt and create an Easter "meal basket" with enough food for each students and their family during spring break. I will sell baked goods, write letters, and tell people what I am trying to do, so I can get more people involved. Meals from the Heart has taught me that nothing is possible without the help of others. Hopefully, once I am able to fundraise the amount of money I need I will purchase 50 baskets, double up on meals... (5 pound of rice, 3 cans of beans, 2 cans of vegetables, 4 cans of canned meats, pack of cookies, etc.), bags of candy, packs of eggs, goody bags, pencils, crayons, and coloring books. Once everything is purchased, my friends and family will help me put the baskets and goody bags together. I will deliver everything 3 days before spring break.
