The Problem

Over the past two years, I have been involved in a mediation program at my school. After being in the program for one year, I became a certified mediator.I am trying to promote non-violence through alternate dispute resolution. I want students and young adults to realize that violence does not solve anything; compromise is the key to problem-solving.

Plan of Action

My role, however, did go beyond the context of my school. I saw the progress that mediation produced at my school, and I wanted to spread the awareness to other schools around my community, encouraging others to adopt similar problem-solving habits. Thus, our school has decided to participate in a mediation youth summit. I am currently helping students within the law academy to produce a video that will act as a guide for other schools to follow. I want this video to be an inspiration to help students solve conflicts through alternate dispute resolutions. I want others to see that oftentimes students can act as a neutral third party because they can empathize with their fellow students more than adults can. Hopefully my actions will spread awareness throughout Miami-Dade County and even extend beyond those borders into the United States. I want to spread the awareness and implement a student mediation program throughout all high schools within the United States.
