Mentoring Through Athletics

the problem:

We are trying to save the youth that gets lost in the system through the No Child Left Behind Act. We work with at risk youth to improve their grades so they can graduate middle school and move onto a high school as opposed to a continuation high school. We also strive to promote healthy lifestyles through exercise. A lot of students come from low income families and single parent households, so we like to maintain a positive approach to bettering their attitudes and their outlook on the importance of education.

why it's important:

It is important to me because education is the only way to better yourself. Ultimately you can do no wrong in trying to learn, the only wrong you do it disabling a child to their right to learn. Many people do not see the backlash of the NCLB Act and it is important to bring these students to the forefront. It is also important in this community because it is surrounded by wealthy school districts, yet there are several that are on a "needs improvement" level in this sturggling neighborhood. It should not matter where you come from or what side of town you live on to determine the level of education you receive from the same state system.

the plan of action:

Our plan is to reach out to middle school students and mentor them with high school and college volunteers to help them with their homework. We give positive messages that deal with the types of environments they live in, and give them examples of lives they could leave if they continue with their education. We also allow for a physical activity because we understand that kids learn better when stimulated by both mind and body.

how you can get involved:

Others can make the problem in middle schools more aware by bringing it to the community. Also, more programs like ours can be implements to try and save the next generation.

project updates:

12/14/2009

As of right now we are working to make it to the winter break. When we come back from break, we expect to have the challenge of getting students reengaged and ready to learn. It will also be difficult because we are losing college mentors, but hopefully we will get more from Cal State University San Marcos. If you are in the area of Escondido,San Marcos, Vista, Rancho Bernardo or any other area of North County, please contact Mentoring Through Athletics (760) 201-6199 to volunteer and get involved in our fight to bring education back to schools!
