The Problem

The problem that I am trying to solve is homelessness. I go down to Mexico with my church youth group yearly to build homes for the families living in extreme poverty. Many people are homeless or living in pretty awful conditions. The last family that I helped was living in palm tree leaves. Mexico is very cold at night and living in leaves is not something you want to be doing in the winter.

Plan of Action

We drive down to Mexico for four to five days and camp. We bring our own food and supplies and what not. We get up very early every morning and drive to where ever the families are living. We truly build two or three homes with our bare hands, from the ground up. We take a large stack of lumber, mounds of dirt, buckets of nails, 50 bags of cement, wheelbarrows, and saws and make a house that will change an entire family's life. And we do it all by hand. There is no electricity, so hammers take the place of nail guns. Handsaws and two buckets are replacements for power saws and a workbench. We make our own contraption to sift rocks out of dirt, and then use that dirt to hand make cement. The lack of comforts, the hot days, and the cold nights will add to the challenge. A lot of hard work and time goes into this. But this is what I love doing. I love going down there and I love seeing something, knowing that I personally made a difference. Going down to Mexico has changed my life and has made me more appreciative of everything i have in my life. This Mission provides direct support to families living in third world conditions and it is an opportunity to live out my Catholic faith in an incredible way.
