The Problem
Amidst the current obesity pandemic, we are trying to fill the health and fitness void within our community due to recent economic constraints. The local parks department has recently lost its recreation center and can no longer fund open community swim in the high school pool. The school board has also been forced to cut funding for physical education, and these classes are now elective at the middle school level. Many health related local businesses and non-for-profit agencies are also suffering during these tough economic times, which also reflects on our communal camaraderie.
Plan of Action
Last year we created and hosted Midnite Fitnite featuring the Insomniac Swim and are currently planning the second annual rendition. This seven hour nighttime fitness event located in our high school athletic facilities in April includes open swim in the pool, guest speakers, health related demonstrations, a philanthropy fair featuring local health and fitness related businesses and non-for-profit agencies, sports clinics hosted by varsity high school athletes, instructional fitness classes, and a high school dance. As an alum of our high school, NBA star Gordon Hayward also made a special guest appearance at the event, signing autographs and shooting hoops with the students. Furthermore, we had approximately 70 volunteers, many of which joined our Philanthropy Anonymous, an online subgroup we created to connect volunteers to other local volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Last year we raised over $300 from one dollar admissions for the local parks department, but this year we are hoping to significantly increase our donation through extensive advertising and a two dollar admission.
