We are Monumental Baptist Church, a small Christian Congregation of about 400. We are located in the inner city of Chicago Illinois, USA. Our community is under going Urban Renewal and many of our members have been displaced. We are struggling with our outreach programs in meeting the needs of young African American Children at the elementary and high schools grades in our restructured neighborhood. We provide free tutoring, mentorship programs, sponsorship programs, and safe haven programs for the youth that still reside in our community and open to all others seeking a light in a dark place. Our resources are limited but the need is great. Our community is in Chicago , Illinois. As our community is undergoing urban renewal the quality of the life for many of the families that remain in the area has not improved enough to change their financial status as demonstrated by the 98% status of eligibility for free lunch by their children who attend Chicago Public Schools.
"Movies and Play on the Lot" is one of our new community outreach programs designed to provide free outside recreational organized activities to a low income African American inner city community to encourage children to increase their physical activities outdoors to combat obesity and their sedentary life styles. Many of our children within this community report that the levels of violence and lack of outdoor playgrounds and equipment that prevent them from enjoying organized play outside. The numerous levels of violence that are being reported daily here in the inner city of Chicago is a major factor in the our children not being able to go outside and play. This accounts for their sedentary life styles which is a contributing factor to lack of exercise and rising numbers of young children who now suffer with obesity. Many children report that they only have gym at school once a week. They also report that many activities at the local Y.M.C.A.’ require membership, and park district activities are limited and have rising cost factors.
We are a small Community Church and open our doors to all children in the neighborhood regardless of membership, race, creed, color, or sex. We open our facilities to provide free tutoring, regulated play, regulated recreation, and family orientated weekend activities. We are dedicated to providing for the full aspects of our children, developing their minds and bodies. Our event is scheduled to begin June 1, 2008 every Friday and Saturday. We are planning on showing only "G" rated movies, providing healthy snacks, and supervised recreational play on our 1/2 block parking lot. We have our church members and community members volunteering to assist with the safe supervision of the children. We have the the alderman's promise to ensure adequate police protection during the event. What we lack are funds to purchase sport's equipment, and sportswear for the children. We are hoping that your foundation will be willing to help us by providing sports equipment such as gear for softball, basketball, table tennis, or field hockey or the funds to purchase the equipemnt so that we can provide healthy recreation for our children.
