The Problem
One of the greatest sources of toxicity to our planet as well as our fellow human beings is factory farming. The proliferation of this totalitarian view of agriculture can be attributed to it's incredible monetary reward for the corporations who run them. Unfortunately the consumers of the food and the land that it was grown on are left to pick up the tab.
Plan of Action
We beleive this answer will come through the practice of permacultural community supported agriculture. Our non-profit organization, the Revive the Roots foundation will be leased a 25 acre farm from our town's land trust on which to plant a permaculture based edible forest garden. This garden will be economically prolific while also serving as a wildlife sanctuary and a community garden/agro-botanic garden. This revived farm will serve as a hub for members of our community to come and learn about sustainable agriculture or simply spend time with nature.
We have already appeared in our town's local newspaper "The Valley Breeze" (A link to the article- http://breezepapers.com/2011/02/23/observer/meet-the-new-face-of-farming) where they called us "the new face of farming."
This spring we are planting an extensive vegetable crop and are planting our raspberry, strawberry and blueberry patches. These crops will help us survive economically long enough to cover the costs of planting our long term investment; the edible forest gardens. Once completed, the Mowry estate will be a mature forest where every tree species is a different type of fruit or nut tree. We hope to someday leave this forest in the hands of the local sustainable farmers of tomorrow. Humanity faces very difficult times ahead, with very dynamic and complex problems at the core of it all. It's about time we stop adding to the problems of our future and start providing the infrastructure for solution.
The agro-revolutionaries of tomorrow face a near impossible yet imperative task. They're going to need all the help they can get.
