The Problem
Isolation; creates an image of being cut off from the world. When combating illness your world transforms; from going to school to tutors. Your only interaction is with family and doctors. Parents need to be strong, but cope with their child’s illness and new limitations. Hospitals may offer counseling for parents, they often opt to stay with their child.
Parents who do not seek counseling fall into isolation as well. They have no one to turn to, no where to go. Ultimately their levels of depression rise, along with the amount of money they pay to restore their child to health. The average family has four members; each member has friends who they impact. These kids do not only change the lives of their family, but the thousands of people around them. We are 100 strong, but their world is smaller than most, with only two scenes in their life’s’ story.
Plan of Action
Our recent ways for combating childhood illness includes a Spaghetti Dinner, Letters to Erin, Great Toy Give, Help Logan, and Stop the Bop. The spaghetti dinner for Erin brought in ten thousand dollars, and was a huge success throughout the area.
Letters to Erin has recently been adapted on campus. Erin’s mother asked teens to write Erin letters of encouragement to help her keep fighting. Erin is a 14 year old girl recently diagnosed with stage 3 soft tissue cancer.
The Great Toy Give is something Joey’s Eagles does as often as possible. During the Holiday season, our sponsors from United Way wrapped donated toys for our delivery during the month of December. On March 4th, we are going to have lunch with families who receive care from the Leigh Valley Pediatric unit. As well as hand out toys donated by Toys for Tots and watch their faces beam, with wide smiles.
Lastly, help Logan is a program through our friends at Caring Bridge. Logan is a one year old baby battling Neuroblastoma. We set up a benefit with our sponsors at the Sherman Theater for Logan and Sean, a five year old boy fighting Adrenoleukodystrophy. The benefit is a pirate musical that will take place March 20th.
Stop the Bop is a fundraiser where the song “Mm Bop” by Hanson is played 24/ 7 until their financial goal is reached to stop it. This year ESHS North’s National Honors Society put on their second annual STB for Joey’s Eagles. They raised about $1,000.
During the summer we will put on a fashion show where our children will be the models, and local businesses will donate the latest fashions. It will be a great event for the community to come together and meet our kids.
