The Problem

In the Chicago Public Schools, instrumental music lessons are very rarely included in the curriculum. This leaves many students unable to study music because their families are unable to fund their music education. With more music programs being cut each year, children become less likely to receive the education they deserve.

Why It's Important

Music For Kids is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to making instrumental music lessons available to public school students, regardless of their financial situation. The majority of our students come from low-income households, and without the Music For Kids program, they would not have the option of studying music.

The Plan Of Action

I started this organization about a year ago, as a high school junior. I was spending two weeks student teaching in a Chicago Public School. During this time, I brought my violin to show the students, and their reactions were incredible. They all wanted to learn how to play the violin too. I came up with the idea for Music For Kids about two weeks later. I began by sending letters to every instrument shop I could find, in hopes of having some instruments donated. Soon, I had collected fifty instruments. With the help of a nearby high school, I raised over $1500 for other supplies the students would need. Then, I talked to friends, performers, and teachers, in hopes of finding enough teachers to get the program started. We held classes for the first time in the summer of 2008. Since then, Music For Kids has become an after-school program, offering classes three days a week.

How Can Others Get Involved?

If anyone in the Chicago area who would be interested in volunteering, please contact me. We're always looking for more help! If you have an instrument you would like to donate, please, let me know!
