Music Unites & Music Unites Youth Choir

the problem:

Lack of musical education and musical opportunities in NYC public schools that lack proper funding for musical arts programs. Through Music Unites and Music Unites Youth Choir I'm helping to promote inspiration, creativity and collaboration through musical expression, and helping students benefit from musical education, exposure and experience. In addition, Music Unites aims to connect people and audiences, breaking down barriers across different genres of music.

why it's important:

I’m a fan of all music and am honored to be part of an organization that aims to provide audiences with a unique, inclusive way to experience music, fosters inspiration, creativity and collaboration, and connects people. I think it’s important to support talented artists who are struggling to get their music heard and, also to support communities in need of musical rejuvenation through initiatives like Music Unites Youth Choir.

the plan of action:

Continuation of Music Unites Youth Choir, an ensemble of approximately 47 students who meet weekly after school to practice, under the direction of a choir director. The group is open to NYC students from inner city schools from the five boroughs.
I have helped get the choir started by assisting in finding the rehearsal space and choir director. I have also helped by coordinating our first interactive visit to the choir, by performer John Forte, and I'm assisting in the coordination of performance opportunities for the choir, such as an upcoming March performance at Carnegie hall.

A Do Something Growth Grant would help support the continuation of this valuable initiative and be put to use toward one of the following expenses which Music Unites needs to satisfy by May 2010: Transportation for children for upcoming Carnegie Hall performance, Music Unites Youth Choir Special Guests for spring 2010 (ie. John Forte), Production of Events to raise awareness of Choir.
Music Unites Youth Choir has been a valuable experience for the students involved, providing an opportunity to learn, share, connect and grow through music!
