The Problem
My Brother's Keeper is an organization founded and establish on Morehouse College's campus. The organization consists of Spelman College and Morehouse College students. Both institutions are located in the West End community of Atlanta, GA. We regularly attend a local transitional housing facility for homeless single mothers and their families. We try to eliminate the negative stigma attached to homeless youth. We want to ensure that we become positive role models in the teens' lives and help them obtain jobs, important life skills, and at least a high school diploma. We give the students a shoulder to lean on, an ear to be heard and mentor to look up to. With the addition of our mentoring services, we seek to lessen the number of gangs, angry youth, and other stereotypical paths associated with underprivileged youth.
Plan of Action
The organization meets once a week to attend a local homeless shelter where we spend at least a period of one hour of contact. Within this one hour, mentors meet with individual teens to assist with any homework or personal concerns. In addition, we establish certain days with specific activities: discussions on popular topics; life skills training where we educate the teens on an important skill that is needed to lead a successful life; field trips/group activities to recreational and/or educational facilities; and "Enjoy The Arts Day", where we set up demonstrations and activities that exhibit a particular style of art.
