The Problem
When I was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes I remember feeling confused, scared, alone, and different. There are 3 million type 1 diabetics in the world! Half of them are only children! I want to use my passion for my diabetes to make sure that others don't have to feel scared and alone like I did. Sometimes people around us just don't understand exactly what we are going through. Even our doctors don't understand emotionaly what we feel because they don't live with diabetes themselves. The goal of this project is to create a community were diabetics can vent and get opinions and support from others who have delt with and go through similar problems. Even family members like parents or siblings could support eachother on the site. I know how helpful it was when other parents of diabetics reached out to my parents.
Most importantly I want to inspire a future generation of successful diabetics who don't let their condition hold them back
Plan of Action
Experiencing life with diabetes first hand, I want to inspire and support other kids and their families with diabetes. By giving a support system where diabetics can talk with other diabetics, we can achieve a better sense of self acceptance which leads to better diabetes management.
I would like to make a website that is geared towards kids and teens. On the website there would be forums, helpful links, inspiring stories, educational games for diabeties. There are plenty of websites out there for diabetics but from my experience they are for older kids and mostly adults. A website just for kids and their families would be very beneficial because specially in the adolescent years, life with diabetes can be hard. With trying to fit in and making choices I think it is important for kids to have their own support system that is easy for them to use and a system that addresses issues important to them (not a blog geared for adult diabetics dealing with adult problems).
