The Problem

Many people at our school do not know the difference between native and invasive non-native plants. It is our hope that by planting more native plants, students would not only become more educated, but the school would also look more beautiful at the same time. One planting area is simply for aesthetics, the other is for educational purposes. The second are will be used by at least one biology teacher to teach her students about these plants and identify the birds that might come into the garden.

Plan of Action

What my club and I have been doing so far is developing our aesthetic garden. We've planted many native plants over the past two years, adding to a garden that was started six years ago and then started planting on a hill that used to be extremely barren. This summer, I will be heading a project in which my club and I will be planting many native plants in a set garden. We already have a sprinkler system in progress and I have a plant advisor to help me figure out which plants grow better next to each other. I'm still looking for grants and fundraiser ideas to help pay for the plants and more volunteers would be a huge help, but we are on the right track so far. Our hope is that almost all of the biology teachers will use this garden to teach their students.
