The Problem

Alcoholism and drug abuse run rampant in the Navajo reservation of Houck, Arizona. For many children, education beyond high school seems almost impossible. There are so many broken families, as many are left fatherless through all the alcoholism. For the few who do get to move on to college or university, almost none come back, because they don't want to go back to a home that seems to have virtually nothing for them. I want to show all the children who feel like there is no hope that there IS hope. That it's possible to overcome all the problems in the community and make a good life for themselves, instead of getting caught up in the cycle of alcoholism and drug abuse.

Plan of Action

Our church had sent teens over there prior to the trip I went to, and continues to send youth over there every summer. Many people who have gone on the trip before still keep in touch with children they have met, and keep steady pen-pal relationships. Every year, there is an application process for those interested in going on this trip, and, once the team members for the trip are decided, the youth start preparing for the trip by organizing lesson plans, games, and sing-a-long songs. We also prepare for the trip by studying Navajo culture, so that we can know the Navajo people better before meeting them.
