See It

Due to Louisville's large federal refugee resettlement program, there is a constant influx of refugees. Approximately seven percent of America's immigrants are refugees, while Louisville's share is almost twice the national at 15 percent. As victims of trauma, refugee youth need guidance and direction. Some children, however, need extra support due to their exceptionally difficult past. New Beginnings, a mentoring program supported by Kentucky Refugee Ministries, will provide extra support to youth in need. The program entails ESL tutoring, community orientation, recreational activities and an art project for middle and high school age children. As mentors, college students and other dedicated adults will guide and assist these children. Ten children have already been identified as in need of guidance, and ten mentors have also been identified and paired with a child. Prior to the initial gathering, parents became acquainted with their child's mentor, and gatherings began January 26, 2008. Though there are various mentoring programs such as the Boys and Girls Club, New Beginnings is the only one that focuses on the needs of refugee youth. This program is unique in that it concentrates on refugee children who have limited English, experienced prolonged interruption of schooling in their home countries, arrived in Louisville and enrolled in school mid-semester, and incurred psychological aftereffects of having experienced violence and separation from family members. Not only will children and their families benefit from this mentoring program, schools and neighborhoods will reap benefits as these children follow the path towards a brighter future. New Beginnings' ultimate goal is to help refugee youth successfully integrate with their peers and community in a healthy manner.
