The Problem
The devastation suffered during Hurricane Katrina was catastrophic. Unfortunately, a lot of the destruction from Katrina remains. There are still millions of people who can't go home because the conditions in New Orleans are substandard. There is still trouble with air quality, water quality, and flood damage.
Plan of Action
My church youth group has connected with a church in New Orleans and with a program that organizes work areas. Another step my youth group has done to prepare ourselves for this journey was raising over $10,000 towards airfare, car rentals, food, fuel, and supplies. We've done that through hard work and creative fundraising including, but not limited to, making and selling "green" shopping and hobo bags from recycled fabrics, a Medieval Dinner, a bake sale, and craft fairs. Despite our hard work, we still need more money to finance our mission trip. While we are down in New Orleans, we will contribute to rebuilding destroyed neighborhoods in and around New Orleans.
