The Problem

The Rural & Migrant Ministry (RMM) is working towards building a just New York State by empowering disenfranchised groups, especially farmworkers and rural migrants. It is a unique organization in New York because it works hard to overcome the isolation and marginalization of this rural community of people. The Youth Arts Group (YAG) is a branch of RMM that inspires a diverse group of high school students to work towards just change in their communities. They use various art forms to express complex social justice issues and promote change.

Plan of Action

This summer, I will help YAG create photo journalism artwork that demonstrates the issues of farmworkers rights, access to health care in rural communities, and domestic violence. I will help organize workshops for the students where community leaders educate them about these issues, and then we will take pictures around our community to tell local stories. The pictures and other pieces of artwork will be displayed in expositions. YAG members will also be attending various rallies to fight for farmworkers rights.
