The Problem
Lack of education resulting in descrimination, abuse, self-abuse, etc. Multiple! Basically enlightening youth to better understand themselves, others, their families, and to be leaders in their lives. Problems trying to be solved range from drug abuse, to depression, to physical abuse, and suicidal thoughts. We also have projects overseas in different 3rd world countries that are trying to promote abstinence and healthy relationships...in hopes of helping the AIDS epidemic in some of these countries. We hold several outdoors camps over the summer for young adults. They are designed to give people a chance to overcome anything they are dealing with and recieve support from a family environment. We also have a family camp every summer (new) that is designed to help families with communication skills, and to help them resolve conflict or apathy, and to show them the effects of a harmful family environment on children. Youth = Future, we try to cover it all and it's always in the making! We are the future!
Plan of Action
This year is going to be my second year as a volunteer for NextGen Academy. I will be the program coordinator for the California branch and so I will be in charge of basically everything that we do. I really want to try getting into public high schools this year and hopefully putting on some programs to help kids with issues like drug abuse, anorexia/bulimia, suicide, etc. Last year was our first year trying it out, so we were really only able to make connections. It's called Momentum, and we will have 3-4 mobile teams located in different locations throughout the west coast. This year I really want Momentum to really get some momentum so we can have a bigger effect on the youth of America. We're also still improving our week long summer camp Ignite to cover some of the touchy subjects I mentioned above. We also want to show kids that their are other outlets for their lives, that's why we do a lot of physical activities like paintballing, hiking, acting, etc. Every year our Seattle branch goes to about 5 different countries in Africa (in the past it's also been Bangladesh, and SE Asian countries), to teach health education, cleanliness, and some character education. The overseas experience is really eye-opening for these American youth as well, maybe even more so than we think. We're always trying to improve the overseas projects, hoping to be able to contribute in more of a substantial way but money is always an issue for non-profits. I'm planning to look at new ways to get grants for the up coming year and hopefully continually so we won't have to spend as much time doing fundraisers, and more time out in the world! We'll see how it goes...
