The Problem

Our goal is to help NHS students learn to live sustainably by reducing the amount of waste that enters the landills from our school. Along with “reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic”, making recycling part of our school’s agenda is a great idea. Recycling protects the environment, conserves resources, reduces the need for new landfills, protects against global warming, and more. Our plan is to set up a school recycling program that will provide students and staff with a means to recycle waste effectively. This recycling dumpster replaced one of our trash dumpsters and lowered the amount of trash entering the other dumpsters.

Plan of Action

For the school: Hallways and high-traffic locations have convenient recycling bins. Each Copy machine has a recycle bin clearly labeled for paper. The recycling dumpster is used for collection of Accepted Materials: Aluminum food and drink containers Plastics with symbols #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 Newsprint Corrugated cardboard Magazines All Office paper (wax free paper; copy paper, mail, phonebooks, etc.) For athletic events: Recycle bins are located near exits and high traffic areas (concession stand) Announcements are regularly made to remind spectators to recycle. For the Cafeteria: Recycle bins are located near exits and high traffic areas (concession stand) For the students: Encourage recycling (collection and cooperation). Regularly announce and support recycling.
