The Problem

Night To Shine Prom is a group of dedicated University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students, working towards creating a special moment for young adults with special needs. Our group works together to fund and host a Prom in the spring for adults and teens who don't get to feel the joy of a normal high school rite of passage. Everyone should get to feel like a shining star for one night in their life, especially those of us who have extra challenges with everyday life.

Plan of Action

Through the help of your grant, community donations, and student volunteers we plan to host a prom in April of 2012 for mentally handicapped teens and adults in the Chapel Hill/Durham community. We have connections to special needs teachers in the schools in our community, which we will use to reach out to students interested in attending as well as gathering information on what we can help them with. Last year we were able to get funding through a Miss UNC philanthropy grant, which included a tax exemption code, however Miss UNC has graduated and it is up to us to continue the project. Continuing this project is important to us after seeing the impact it had on disabled and non-disabled students alike last year.
