The Problem
Lack of winter activities for youth on the northside of Alpena, MI. The community of youth there have not much to do in the wintertime and lack of activity leads to getting into trouble. We also want to address the discrimination/bullying issue with diverse guest speakers before each teen dance. Fear and bullying comes from ignorance and we want to attend to this need with education and people who have experienced bullying share their stories with our teens.

Plan of Action
We found an array of problems; along with strengths that we would like to build on to unite the people of the North-side Alpena. We found issues with discrimination, bullying, public health & safety, poverty, and substance abuse. These problems will be inherited by the youth of this area if intervention is not taken to engage them to be involved in their community. Our answer is to interest the youth in age appropriate ways, starting by addressing local bullying issues, while offering fun activities that they would enjoy, engaging them in north-side community activities that will encourage pride in their community. This will also help our youth socialize outside of school and home while keeping them out of trouble in a supervised atmosphere. We plan on holding dances twice a month for teens through the winter season. We also want to do a mural project on the outside of our building. We plan on engaging local organizations and businesses for donations of art supplies and asking parents to volunteer to help. There will be two BSW students from Madonna University to oversee and measure the success of the program along with me to plan a youth committee. There will also be an officer available to counteract any possible violent or illegal activity.
