See It

Standing in the driveway of the home they were building, the members of the University of North Alabama’s Habitat for Humanity chapter were already thinking about the next home. Next time, they decided, the home would be environmentally friendly. Now that home is in the design stage. It will be solar-powered and hopefully zero-energy, meaning that the home will use an average of no manufactured energy. The home will also incorporate energy-efficient appliances and environmentally friendly building materials. By building this house, we hope to dispel the myth that low-income people can do nothing to help the environment. We hope to inspire our community by building the first solar home in the area. And, by giving a special lady the opportunity to own her own home, we will, of course, be working toward Habitat’s goal of eliminating poverty housing and homelessness. Our chapter has gratefully received two very helpful sums of money, a grant and a donation. We have also fundraised, but we still need more funds to build this house this summer.
