We are holding a 3 on 3 basketball tournament at our community center to raise money and awareness for Nothing But Nets, a nonprofit organization that buys bed nets for families in Africa in order to combat malaria. We chose to raise money for this cause because it is a preventable disease, yet kills thousands of people every day. The tournament will bring the community together by getting multiple age groups to participate. The format of the tournament will allow all teams to be guaranteed four games and then an opportunity to play for the championship. It will be a fun atmosphere with prizes and t-shirts given out. We will be utilizing local businesses as potential sponsors. We also intend on having various booths at the event ranging from food to first aid. As far as actually raising money for the event, we are planing to charge a $45 entry fee per team. We will also encourage donations by marketing the idea that only $10 is needed to purchase a bed net which could end up saving a family and it only takes about $1 to protect one a child a year.
