The Problem

We live in a strange time and place where the average food item travels 1500 miles before reaching its consumer. We are disconnected with the sources of our food. Our food system is dependent on dangerous chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, not to mention its dependence of tons (literally) of fossil fuels and carbon emissions. Industrial food production breeds disease (e-coli scares, etc.), the unethical treatment of animals (factory farms), nutrient deficient food (oranges today have half the vitamin-C as 50 years ago), and the breakdown of food communities. It also sucks resources and money out of local economies, where it is needed most, and directs it toward wall-street. Our food system is sick. Something needs to change.

Plan of Action

Nourish(meant) seeks to instigate fundamental change in the way we grow, distribute and consume food. In addition to this primary goal, it seeks to educate about and model how individuals and communities can address climate change, implement Cradle to Cradle systems, utilize biofuels and sustainable energy, and start seed banking. Built on relationships, Nourish(meant) is geared toward participatory and action-focused education. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To do this, Nourish(meant) is in the process of building a biofuel powered education center run out of a 14 passenger school bus. We will install a kitchen inside, a garden on top, and travel around America to grow food and relationships, share knowledge and cook food for folks. As we travel, we will ask the question: what does nourishment mean to you? As we build relationships around shared food, we will start conversations and share ideas and knowledge about home-food-production, biofuels, permaculture, etc. As we travel, we will certainly learn more than we teach. We hope to make friendships and build a Nourish(meant) network, which will be connected through our website. The project will evolve with the people we meet and the ideas we encounter. This is a living education project –it will grow, too, as it is nourished. If the summer proves a successful venture, the project will hopefully begin a year-long tour beginning summer 2010.
