The Problem

The OAEP strives to educate individuals and corporations of their impact on ocean acidification, focusing on residents of Washington State. The goal of the OAEP is to influence lawmakers to implement stricter and more effective methods of carbon dioxide emission reduction. To achieve this, massive letter campaigns and petitions will be utilized. The goal is to collect 15,000 signatures for the petition. In educating individuals and organizations, the hope is that they will take effective measures to reduce their carbon footprint. Hopefully, fishing companies will implement more energy-efficient engines and boats, such as the Steyr Hybrid Marine Engine. Individuals can contribute by utilizing mass public transport and energy efficient appliances, such as the METRO for bus transport and ENERGY STAR appliances. The goal is to help increase public transport boardings to 12 million, surpassing the 2009 record of 11.7 million boardings by 300,000. Eventually, progress will be monitored through inquiries with the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, to see if the acidity in Puget Sound has increased, decreased, or remained the same. The ultimate goal is to decrease the acidity or to at least prevent the acidity from increasing in the Puget Sound.

Plan of Action

As entire elimination of human-produced carbon dioxide is infeasible and impossible, we must strive to lessen and control the emissions. To do this, the OAEP will educate the public, both individuals and corporations, on their effect on the ocean. The next step is to influence lawmakers, through letter campaigns.
