The Problem
The poverty rate of Appalachians is higher than that of all other minority groups, except for Native Americans.
Students in the Ohio Valley, a region in Appalachia, go to high schools where there are no honors or AP classes and the nearest place to take the SAT exam is over fifty miles away.
On average, less than 40% of students of students in the Ohio Valley go on to a four-year college after high school.
The Ohio Valley Dream Initiative was created to increase the college enrollment rate, provide access to guidance counseling and resources, and ultimately help Ohio Valley students fulfill their goals and dreams.
Plan of Action
This fall, we presented an interactive seminar called "College Applications 101" to juniors and seniors at three Ohio Valley high schools. We also held a free college success seminar, open to the public, at a local community college. With the input of guidance counselors, local high school alumni and my friends at colleges around the country, we created a peer advice-based resource guide for disadvantaged students to better understand the college application process.
On the project website, we've posted an online college resource guide, useful links, and a mentor program application. We will be adding videos of our seminars from earlier this fall.
