The Old Towne Arts Center, scheduled to open in May 2008, is an arts space offering classes and exhibition space to the local community of Slidell, LA. The location was generously donated by a former business owner who decided to offer the space rather than rebuild his former dry cleaning business, which had been in operation for three generations.
The community of Slidell, Louisiana, is about 30 miles outside of New Orleans. Residents were affected both physically and emotionally by the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.
As the head of Drawing and Painting at OTAC, my current focus is to work with middle school & high school age students, offering workshops and classes in Art that provide a much needed diversion from the social atmosphere of growing up post-Katrina. Several articles and studies show a significant increase in drug use and suicide in middle school to high school age students living in Slidell, LA.
My goal is to provide students with the opportunity to develop an interest in the visual arts, to bring about a passion for something that is therapeutic versus destructive.
I am raising funds to purchase studio equipment for the arts center.
