The Problem
All kids have a right to go to school; but in our world today, poverty strips them of that chance. The Olevolos Project creates educational opportunities for disadvantaged children from the Olevolos Village in Tanzania, Africa. Our mission is to provide a safe, secure and supportive environment so these kids can love and learn together.
Plan of Action
We finished building The Olevolos Center in December of 2009 and in January of 2010, our local staff of seven opened the doors of our facility to the community. On weekday mornings, we have 28 students enrolled in our nursery program; on weekday afternoons, we have 22 students enrolled in our tutoring program; and on Saturday mornings, we have 53 students enrolled in our recreational program.
The center reached full capacity just four weeks after opening. Now, we are looking to expand so that we can meet the needs of the village. Our nursery school students will be graduating in ten short months: in order for them to continue receiving high-quality education (and to welcome a new class into the center), we need to build a primary school and hire more teachers.
Because we have the necessary space on our two-acre plot of land, we could begin building classrooms immediately. Our contractor has estimated that each classroom will cost $10,000 and that we will need an additional $10,000 to build a kitchen and space for teachers. With $100K, we would be able to expand our programming by 700% and make a substantial contribution towards the educational needs of disadvantaged children from The Olevolos Village.
