The Problem
As a member of Key Club International in my high school, I received the idea for this project. Operation Christmas Child helps children in impoverished countries all over the world to have a brighter Christmas and to receive the gift of God's love.
Plan of Action
This project is a national project, and although I did not come up with the idea, I believe I helped spread the spirit of giving to hundreds of students both in my high school and in my kindergarten class where I am a teacher aide. First I went to my Childhood & Parenting Teacher, Kathy Connor, and asked her if it would be alright for me to promote this gift giving idea to her classes, since the project is to help young children and her classes are all about the care and development of children. I also asked the teacher I am aiding, Ms. Michele Gates, if I could get the kindergarten children involved in the project. After getting it approved with the kindergarten principal, I set out and began to promote the project. I talked to each of Mrs. Connor's 5 classes and persuaded them to each bring in something to fill at least two shoe boxes per class, one for a boy and one for a girl. Then I typed a list of suggestions that could be included in the shoe boxes. After that, I also wrote a letter to the parents of the kindergarten students explaining the project and asking for their help. I feel like I really made the high school students appreciate what they have and realize that it doesn't take much to give, even if it is just a little bit. And I feel like my kindergarten students are learning what it is like to think about someone other than themselves. In all, the students I enlisted to help in my project created over 20 shoe boxes, which was way more than my hopes of 12.
