The Problem
We are working to provide a school in the rural town of Pichon, Haiti with a solar-powered biodiesel processor, and solar panels. The biodiesel processor will provide the town with biodiesel which they can use to fuel any diesel engine, use like kerosene in lanterns, or to cook with. A byproduct of biodiesel is also incredibly important; glycerin. The glycerin pulled out during the filtration of biodiesel can be diluted and used as a fertilizer to save the deforested, barren land in Haiti and can be used to make hand soap. The solar panels will not only give energy to the 3 pumps in our biodiesel processor, but it will also give power to the school, giving it electricity for the first time ever. They will finally have access to the modern luxury that is the computer, and they will have lights. With the addition of lights to their school they can keep the school open longer and later to possibly educate past the current standard of a fifth grade education. The problems we are trying to solve are Haiti's ecological and environmental issues.
Plan of Action
First step: I founded Mother McAuley's first Environmental Club. I wrote a letter to the Dean, got it approved and started work in my own school community to make the world greener.
Second step: My teacher sponsor was contacted by an old pal of hers from a school in the city and we became involved with Biodiesel.
Third step: McAuley took over Operation Haiti and began work to get this project going!
Forth step: Start looking for donations to get going!
Fifth step: Work with the donations to BUILD and CONSTRUCT the biodiesel processor we will send down to Haiti.
Sixth step: Build a website and start getting publicity
Seventh step: Hold a school-wide raffle to raise awareness and funds for the project; products donated from local buisnesses.
Eight step: Complete solar thermal part of processor
Ninth step: SEND COMPLETED PROJECT TO PICHON, HAITI!
