How many people are directly involved in your project? : 1000How many people has your project helped? : 1000Location(s)
Mertztown, PA, 19539See map: Google MapsWhat's the problem you are trying to solve?: Last May, I traveld to Uganda, Africa for two weeks. Once I returned home I really wanted to do something to help the people I met while over there. I decided to deal with the problem of malaria since many people I met there suffered from this. Mosquito nets are key factors in controlling malaria and decreasing the number of out breaks. They only cost $9.50, but this is a near impossible thing for an Ugandan family to buy, since most live on under one dollar a day! The people of Uganda are hopeful, friendly, and loveable, but they need help. Why is it important to you?: Operation Net is what came out of my passion and my yearning desire to help Africa. Operation Net is a year long fund raiser which will be ending June 2009. The goal of Operation Net is to raise as much money as possible to purchase mosquito nets which will then be given to the people of Uganda, and to spread awareness about the problems in Africa. The third part of Operation Net is to let the U.S. government know that there are a committed group of citizens who care about Africa and would like our government to help them. The letter to Congress, which will be sent June 2009 will hopefully influence them into realizing the problems occuring in Africa and allow them to realize they can help. Mosquito nets are a key item in preventing the spread of malaria and helping control the disease. Once June 2009 comes around, I will be sending all of the money to my friend Pastor Bob-Gad in Uganda. I met Bob-Gad while on my trip, and I trust him completely. He will be then purchasing the mosquito nets and distributing them to the people he knows needs them the most. I will also be giving him a list of people I specifically want to receive the nets, since I still stay in contact with many of my Ugandan friends. Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease, and mosquito nets are a key step in controlling the disease. What's your plan of action?: I have been raising money sinc July 2008, and my overall goal is to raise enough money to purchase 1000 nets, or $9500 and to collect 1000 signatures So far I have raised $4000 and have collected about 200 signatures. I am speaking at local churches, clubs, and festivals as well as advertising my Operation Net flyer wherever I can. I have been featured in local newspapers, and have been getting my school involved as well. I recently was recognized in Harrisburg on the floor of the Reps for my efforts as well. I am also selling Operation Net tshirts as a fundraiser, and have sold 75 so far. My goal is to continue raising awarenss of the problems in Africa and Operation Net. I am sending my donations to Uganda in four installments. In a week of so the first 250 mosquito nets should be delivered to poverty and disease stricken Ugandans. I will continue fundraising until my goal is met! How Can Others Help?: Others can help in three basic ways. They can donate money or buy a tshirt to help purchase the mosquito nets. Like I said $9.50 buys on net and one t-shirt will buy one net as well. They also can sign the letter to Congress and use their voice to influence the government to help as well. Lastly, they can further educate themselves and others about the various problems occuring in Africa.

To all involved with Operation Net,
Your video really moved me. Congratulations on all your success so far in such a worthy endeavor. There is a saying: There is no such thing as a self-less act. I have to think you guys get something in return for doing this wonderful work -- the feeling that "doing something" good for your fellow man is unequaled even by the best birthday gift possible. In other words: giving is better than getting.
Sincerely,
Lori Majewski, Do Something editor-in-chief
this project seems really great...seems simple but makes SUCH a big difference great idea and awesome job making it happen! and way to get your message out there in your community too
Hey! I really admire what you do! Check out NETwork Against Malaria, we also send nets to Uganda through Ugandan volunteers, so like you 100% of donations go toward funding NETS! networkagainstmalaria.org. I really admire your work. Hopefully, together we can help end malaria in Uganda!
