The Problem

I am trying to make my community better prepared for disasters and emergencies. I am also trying to teach children in my community to be more prepared and how to be prepared.

Plan of Action

The first step in implementing my project was to start spreading awareness to the community. I wanted to reach out to the kids first and teach them about being prepared for disasters or emergencies. I have created a few brochures for them and their families that explain everything. I am also setting up a First Aid class for kindergarteners through fifth grade for my school district. My second step was trying to start a website that will have information on being prepared for emergencies. It will have links to all the emergency response teams in my community and other major organizations dealing with disasters. My third step is to create boxes for low-income families and elderly people (Meals on Wheels) with household necessities, that will be kept at the Red Cross, until they are needed by the families, and stored at each home for the elderly. These boxes will include toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, and many other things that are used daily. I also want to place cleaning supplies in the boxes like Dawn, laundry soap, flashlight, weather radio, batteries, rags, first aid kits, etc.. My final step is to create a children’s activity book that will have coloring pages, puzzles, and word searches that all deal with emergencies and disasters. It will also have information on how to create their very own family disaster kit. All the schools will get a lesson plan on what and how to help teach the students about being prepared and what to do in an emergency.
