The Problem

Recycled Glass Porous Sidewalks... a material from the future, right? A material that scrubs pollutants from rain water, prevents erosion, and improves storm water management? No more drains? No more salting the sidewalks so they don't turn into sheets of ice? Crazy. Totally crazy, but absolutely true. At Prairie Crossing Charter School, two eighth grade students installed two recycled glass porous sidewalks, made out of a material called Filterpave manufactured by PrestoGeosystems. And three more students are going to continue on this project... Will you help? If you are in the area, drop in! We'd love to see you. Ask for Maeve, or Mr. Greene at the front desk. If you are interested, email me.

Plan of Action

We have been researching PrestoGeosystems and have met with them at our school. We hae developed a plan in conjunction with their team to carry out the installation of the sidewalks. We have also met with the county stormwater management team to analyze how our project will effect the water shed on our campus. We have completed several grants in order to receive the funding to move forward witht he installation. We have a commitment from the company to donate aportion of the installation. We also have a committment from the Motorolla Foundation. OUr goal, to have the sidewalks installed prior to receiving our diplomas in June, was fulfilled. Our new goals are to expand the amount of sidewalk area, and take scientific readings on the already installed sidewalk.
