The Problem

When a massive 9.0 earthquake struck Sendai, Japan in March of 2011, a devastating tsunami was triggered that took tens of thousands of lives. Then an third disaster struck the same area when the tsunami damaged nuclear power plants began to leak radiation. In response, TWO organizations decided to find a way to have kids from all over the world participate in helping those suffering in Japan. 1) STUDENTS REBUILD partnered with DoSomething.org to help raise money for the rebuilding efforts in Japan by making paper cranes. By doing this, students were enabled to trigger a $200,000 donation from the Bezos Family Foundation - $2 for each crane received - to Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in Japan. 2) OSH KOSH B'GOSH, a children's clothing store, also stepped in to empower kids to help children in Japan by encouraging them to create paper cranes to send to Oshkosh stores in Japan. For every crane created, Oshkosh B’gosh would send an article of clothing to the children of Japan.

Plan of Action

1) Advertise on campus that there was a way for students to participate in the relief efforts in Japan. a) Make color flyers to pass around to students (Office Depot donated 100 color copies) b) Advertise in the online school bulletin c) Advertise on Univision - campus tv and announcements 2) Get lots of origami paper 3) Have students come in and make origami cranes during Tuesday lunch meetings for 3 weeks in March & April 4) Have students make them at home for turning in on Tuesdays 5) Fix/Repair cranes not made quite right 6) Take pictures of them 7) Box them up and send them out to Students Rebuild. The last batch was driven to the Osh Kosh B'Gosh store near us.

Project Updates

The Uni Care Project -Do Something Club asked University High students to participate in giving paper cranes to STUDENTS REBUILD's efforts to raise money for Architecture for Humanity's rebuilding work in Japan and dozens of students responded by making 2288 beautiful peace cranes. These cranes were sent out on April 1st and 8th, 2011.

Then dozens more Uni students made 5389 beautiful peace cranes for OSH KOSH BGOSH. That means 5389 articles of clothing for the 5389 cranes! We delivered them to OshKosh on April 16th.
