The Problem

Globally, 1 out of 3 women are beaten or sexually abused during their lifetime, with approximately 3 million women battered in the United States alone. Two out of five South Asian women have experienced partner violence, and gender abuse incidents in the South Asian community continue to be underreported. Although telephone hotlines exist and there are existing websites which provide information on domestic violence, there is currently no direct online resource focused on the South Asian community which allows victims to ask questions anonymously or which connects them to resources across the United States.

Plan of Action

Since its inception in January 2008, OAA has been providing technology solutions to domestic violence victims through its website. I have written and published thirty one articles on various domestic violence issues, including gender abuse and immigration laws, conducted five interviews with activists, and have compiled a comprehensive list of resources for victims and community members. The website has also been visited by an average of 600 unique visitors per month over the last year. Over the next few months, I will be working with the Board to organize promotional events, reaching out to organizations across the United States, and conducting our first campus education programs and computer literacy programs enabling South Asian women and their friends and family to become aware of resources available to them.
