The Problem

The community I had in mind for my project was one that did not have an excess of funds for its school systems. Luckily, or not, depending on how one would look at it, there was one such community within 10 minutes of my house. The school I had in mind was one just like my own, so I decided that was where I would begin this project. My school is very fortunate to have the things we do, but we are unfortunate in the fact that we have very few nice locations on campus that allow for teachers to take their students out of the classroom setting to teach. So I decided, along with the help of my Jr. Civitan sponsoring club, that we should solve that problem and build one outside.

Plan of Action

Beginning in August, I began discussing the project with a member of my club's sponsoring club and my principal. Once we had permission, we purchased all materials and began working. First, we picked the location, as well as outlined where the post holes would need to go. We then dug all of the post holes. On the next workday, we lined string up as a layout and began nailing the pieces of lumber together. We layed tarp down to cover the ground to ensure grass wouldn't grow there for at least 3 months. We kept working digently, as much as time and weather would allow, each workday. We began nailing the floor down, then began on the seats. This is currently where we stand, until we complete it on December 13, 2008. I have made an impact on my school and community by organizing most of the project, informing my club about workdays and all other details, and working every chance I could to ensure a rapid completion date for this outdoor classroom. This outdoor classroom will benefit my school by freeing up space in the library, allowing classes to learn and study outside.
