The Problem
The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) published a report in 2010 that showed some alarming statistics: "American children are now spending an average of seven hours and 38 minutes each day indoors using electronic media, such as television and video games. The NWF further reports that the shift toward an indoor childhood has left this generation of children less physically fit, less able to concentrate, and less able to relate to peers and adults than any previous generation of children. In addition, this generation of children are less able to be effective in the classroom. One solution to this increasing problem is the spend more time outdoors, both learning and playing. Outdoor education gives students the opportunity to develop and sharpen not only outdoor skills, but foster appreciation for the environment and lifelong outdoor recreational activity. These habits positively contribute to the physical and emotional well being of the child. By implementing an outdoor education program at Expeditions Unlimited, we are able to serve the Baraboo, Sauk, Portage, Dells, and Madison school districts, along with some homeschooling programs as well.
Plan of Action
Ideally, the program will start in the spring of 2012, so currently there are informational packets that are being put together to send out to teachers and administrators in the surrounding school districts. Once the packets are distributed, we will follow up with telephone calls and hopefully face to face meetings with the interested schools. During the winter months, time will be spent building curriculum and lesson plans, as well as training our staff to teach the courses Expeditions offers.
