The Problem

The Gerald J Ryan Outreach assists families in meeting emergency needs such as food, clothing, after-care and encourages individuals to become self-sustaining to the best of their abilities. It is one of the largest outreach centers on Long Island, NY serving over 100 individuals per week. They also have an after school and summer program for underprivileged kids. I have been running food drives since 2011 for the outreach center and I came to realize that much of the non-perishable food collected is unhealthy, inexpensive canned food with preservatives. My goal is to bring these families a means of providing a healthier snack to their children through snack containers.

Plan of Action

The Gerald J Ryan Outreach Center has an after school and summer program for underprivilege kids from its surrounding communities. This year I have started a program at their summer camp called "Lets Move Healthy & Fit". A new vegetable garden is being created and planted by the summer camp children. I have collected more than 200 outdoor activity items such as balls and relay race supplies for daily activity; and signed up as the Presidential Challenge Advocate. At the end of the 6 weeks camp, the children who participate in the camp will be rewarded with a certificate from the President. What an honor! I have also reached out to a local sports facility, Sportime, to host a day of sports at their camp for these underprivileged kids at no cost. This will give the kids an opportunity to play at a professional facility that they may otherwise never have the opportunity to do so. Each day the kids will have a lesson on health and fitness and harvest vegetables from their garden for lunch or snack. My project will bring a deeper knowledge of how important health and fitness is in our everyday lives through education and activity. I want to give the families of these children the supplies they need to include a healthy snack in their everyday lives after summer camp. The $500 grant will go to purchase small storage containers for each child to pack fruit or vegetables for their school snack or lunch. A large storage container per family will also be purchased so that parent can pre-prepare their child's snack for the week to make it easier for a busy parent to do.
