7/16/07-Since I won the grant, I have painted a mural at Kristi House, an institution that provides psychological, legal, and financial support to the families of sexually abused children. Once I finished this one, my friends and I proceeded to paint two murals for Perrine Elementary. I am now starting a project of enormous proportions for Palmetto Elementary’s Library to promote reading that involves murals around the entire library. The Miami Herald will be doing a story on our group some time after this project starts. Before Christmas, Painting Smiles will also hold a few “art nights” for kids, engaging the participants in fun art-related activities such as various crafts and face-painting. The ticket price will be around $10 to cover the costs, and all profits will be donated to Kristi House.
Painting Smiles
the problem:
We are a group of experienced young artists at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, and University of Florida who have created Painting Smiles to share our love of art with the community. Through painting murals we hope to promote the causes that we believe in--one of which is that the most important purpose of art is to inspire smiles from the viewer.
At the present we've painted over 500 sq feet of murals and are planning several more projects that will span over 600 sq feet. We have also hosted two arts and crafts nights for elementary school kids to raise awareness and donate to Kristi House, an organization dedicated to sexually abused children.

30why it's important:
We believe strongly in the therapeutic and educational value of art. More than just making those who view our projects smile, the act of making art frees the mind and thoughts. It's one of the most versatile medium of expression, and through our festivals we hope to share it with everyone. This project is important to me because it lets me do what I love and see its impact on those around me; because four years ago it was just a dream and now it's a reminder of what friendship and creativity can achieve.
the plan of action:
We will start a new branch of Painting Smiles in Boston through a partnership of students at MIT and Harvard. Just as in Miami, we will paint murals for local public areas and host arts and crafts festivals for children.
