Paramus Freedom Walk

the problem:

What: Paramus is located less than ten miles from New York City. We suffered great losses on September 11th. Even though eight years have passed, the hurt still lingers. In January of 2007 I decided to initiate a Freedom Walk. The walk is aimed at honoring those touched by 9/11….. a mother or father who lost a child or a child who lost a parent: the First Responders who lost their lives or the ones who saved lives: soldiers who served to keep us free and the ones who are serving now. Its a day were people STOP, to remember.

why it's important:

The Paramus Freedom Walk is important to me, because I dont want anyone to ever forget 9/11/01. I have a walk each year on the Sunday before September 11th to remember. I have sponsors who help pay for everything. When people come in they recieve a free t-shirt & candle. We have a presentation to honor the lives lost on 9/11 and to say "thank you" to our veterans. Our Local Honor Guard comes. Then we walk, while walking we stop at our 9/11 memorial and place a wreath. When we come back there is free food, music, and games for everyone. Its a night that everyone comes together to remember. Anyone you talk to that night can telll you what they were doing on 9/11.

the plan of action:

I have done a couple of things that I believe have impacted the comunity and the nation.
1) I wrote a children's book "20 Steps to a Freedom Walk" its a step by step book to help anyone of any age organize a Freedom Walk.
2) I recently had acting Governor Cody (NJ) sign a bill which makes the Sunday before 9/11 of each year Freedom Walk Day in NJ.
3) I am currently working on having my bill pass all over the country and by winning this award it would help me to achive my dream.

how you can get involved:

9/11 is a day that noone will ever forget. People need time to heal and move forward. One way that people do this is by getting involved, either donating something, setting up a table, giving out candles at the Freedom Walk or just showing up to walk. They are a million ways people can help with the Freedom Walk.
