The Problem
My main target is inner-city minorities14 to 25 years old.. Young adults are dealing with more than ever and because there is so much going on that concerns them, some of the essentials are often forgotten. Simple things like reading, writing and being creative aren’t considered as important as they used to be. With the focus in school education going to teaching to pass tests and not actually teaching to provide long term knowledge. Our young adults need more support than ever and it is time we take notice.
Plan of Action
Parlé has already released 23 issues of the publication and we continue to release the publication bi-monthly. It is distributed for free throughout NYC, at events we put on and at shows where the Parlé Poets perform. We have provided writers opportunities to create a portfolio of their writing and attempt to get paying jobs. Our photographers and web designers have created portfolios and have been able to take the product they created and use it as a visual resume. More former staff members than I can count have gone on to work for bigger companies after establishing themselves with Parlé.
The Parlé Poets have performed at several colleges and high schools across New York City and have gone on to travel to different cities and states. One former performer is currently signed to a major record label and he is pursuing a career in music. Another former performer has made the official debut of her play, which she wrote and directed. She hopes to continue producing the play as well as others. All the artists who have been part of the ensemble have attended college and the three members of the current tour are currently enrolled in school, working on their bachelors degree.
Overall the people who have helped establish the organization continue to progress in their respected fields of interest and Parlé serves as a launching pad. Those who have picked up a copy of the publication have been provided with an excellent variety of content, equivalent to that of multiple other publications combined, but for no cost. Many have been inspired to write, others have considered starting a publication of their own. Those who have witnessed a show with the Parlé Poets have found a new love for spoken word or simply creative writing. Not everyone we meet will pick up a pen and begin writing and not all will decide to create a project of their own but everyone will be inspired.
