The Problem

There is a lot of harassment for skateboarding in the streets. People of all ages are yelled at and sometimes even taken into custody for just carrying their skateboards. Other people can play their sports out on the street and not get any trouble at all so why not skateboarders. Skateboarding is an inexpressive sport that lots of people do everywhere just for that reason. Up north in Minnesota there is not a lot to do and most people don’t have the money to join expressive sports programs through school. So a lot of people turn to the alterative sports like biking and skateboarding. These sports are not only a great cardio workout but they also provide something for people to do that healthy alterative to sitting at home playing video games or getting into drugs.

Plan of Action

Our plan is to build a free skate park where anyone can go and not be harassed just for doing what they love to do. This skate park is going to look a lot like a regular park with art work, benches to watch, and lots of green space. The only difference is people will be allowed to skateboard, bike, rollerblade etc. in the park without getting in trouble. To build a 20,000 square foot concrete skate park (this is a pretty average size) it costs $450,000. So our group has been writing lots of grants, holding fundraisers, and asking for donations. We are so close to getting the money we need to get the park that we want.
