The Problem
According to 2006 data from the South Boston Youth Assets Campaign, only 24% of South Boston teens report the presence of stable and caring adults in their lives, though their presence is one of the strongest predictors of positive developmental outcomes. By the end of middle school, more than 1 in 4 South Boston teens will have used alcohol, more than 1 in 10 will have smoked cigarettes, and 1 in 10 will have used marijuana.
Plan of Action
South Boston Big Sib seeks to build lasting relationships with young people and their families in Southie. Through field trips and weekly group or one-on-one mentoring, we endeavor to create a safe space in which our mentees can take risks, set personal goals, and foster awareness of themselves and their community.
We currently have 12 mentor-mentee pairs and hope to grow in size and quality over the next year, to run in two sites in South Boston, and to become more involved in the community by working with our mentees to run their own community service projects.
